Your dog's coat length, texture, activity level, shedding and comfort influence how often brushing, bathing and trimming may be useful. A short smooth coat and a long coat that tangles easily have different needs.

Keep up with coat brushing where appropriate, pay attention to tangles, and check your dog's paws and nails. If you notice skin irritation, persistent itching, painful matting or signs of illness, contact your veterinarian.
